The letter boasted a big red lipstick kiss by the signature, with assurances of lasting affection toward his former lover. I wonder where the hell he got the lipstick to plant that red kiss. On the other hand, I’d rather not know all the details.

Cary smiled wistfully and returned the letter to its envelope.

I’m glad he’s having a better life. Maybe I’ll find someone, too—one of these days.

THAT SAME night, Blayne sat at his desk in the living room of his apartment, scanning papers from a portfolio spread out before him. Once in a while, he glanced up at the web page displayed on his laptop computer that showed all sorts of numbers and figures he was using to make some decisions for one of his clients. But he was having a really hard time concentrating on his work. The knock that suddenly sounded at the front door was actually a welcome distraction, since he didn’t seem to be getting very far.

That must be Doug. I’m glad he called this afternoon. I can get this stuff done tomorrow at the office anyway.

“Coming!” he called, quickly turning off the computer and filing the portfolio back in his briefcase. Then he hurried to fling the door wide open to admit his old friend and former flame.

“I thought I heard you say that you were ‘coming.’ Take off all your clothes and show me you’re still the hunky sex god you were when we were in college!”

Blayne froze for a moment, still holding on to the doorknob. “Uh… what did you just say?” He grinned at Doug, who was laughing softly at his own playfulness.

“You heard me, Carter! Show me what you’ve got.”

“Get in here, idiot. And I believe you’ve already seen all that I’ve got,” Blayne said as he grabbed his crotch and fondled it for Doug’s benefit. “And stop making all that noise in the hallway. Someone might hear you and take it seriously. I have to live here, you know.”

“Oh, I’m pretty sure your neighbors have got you figured out by now.”

“You are, huh? Have a seat over there on the sofa, and I’ll get you that beer I promised.” He headed for the kitchen.

“The miracle is that they still let you live here,” Doug called in the general direction of the kitchen as he sat down as directed and made himself comfortable. “But I guess every building has to have its token queer these days.” He laughed at his own attempt at humor. “Did you hear that, Blayne?” There was no reply.

Very shortly, Blayne returned with two beers, one of which he tentatively handed to Doug. “You don’t deserve this, you know. You’re being particularly feisty this evening. What’s gotten into you that sparks all this juvenile behavior?”

Doug took a swig of his beer. “Mostly, I was worried about you. You sounded sort of down in the dumps when I called you today so I decided to spark you up with what we might have called foreplay back in the day—so to speak.
